Dear Ruby-Slippered Girl,
The world tells us most days that we aren’t enough, that only others have ‘what it takes’ to be extraordinary, that we have failed or made too many mistakes or fallen short in the past and so we are foolish to think that we are capable of succeeding…or that trying again, beginning again, sticking with it, is silly or futile. Many times, it’s not just ‘the world’ that tells us these lies…it can be people in our lives that we have to deal with every day…even loved ones…the people who should be our biggest cheerleaders. We can even tell ourselves these lies.
The truth is that every single one of us has everything it takes to do the beautiful and extraordinary things that only WE can do. And so we simply must go out and be extraordinary anyway. We must begin again anyway. We have everything we need. We are completely capable of doing the things that our heart yearns to do, to give the things that are within us to give, to heal our heart-hurts, to live the lovely lives our souls cry out to live .
We are Dorothy wearing her ruby slippers…we just need to believe the incredible, beautiful truth that everything we need is within us right now. Then we must choose to act bravely… to notice the ruby slippers on our feet and then be brave enough (and hope-filled enough) to click the heals of our ruby slippers together and move forward on our journey right now as capable and courageous and giving women.
So, Ruby-Slippered Girl, here is your challenge….
“You are capable of more than you know. Aim high. Behave honorably. Prepare to be alone at times and to endure failure. Persist. The world needs all you can give.”
E. O. Wilson
